News from Matt Lafata's Newsletter dated March 4th, 2009 Dear Friends, Welcome to another exciting, informative issue of the Matt Lafata’s Frisco Community Newsletter, now in our 8th year with 41,000 weekly readers. It’s been a great week so far and started off Monday when I read to the children at Primrose Lakehill in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday (see photo on the left). It was nice to see my friend and Primrose owner, Mick Twomey, who I hadn’t seen in quite some time. I leave tomorrow for Boston for what should be two great partner meetings for the company I’ve worked for the last 4 years, Frisco-based HRchitect, the leader in human resources (HR) systems strategic consulting. Being from the Boston area (Gloucester), I am used to the cold and snowy conditions they’ve experienced this past week. Erika also has a meeting Monday in western Massachusetts, so she’ll fly up later. We’re looking forward to a very brief visit with my folks, sister and her family in Gloucester. This week, our Newsletter Sponsor is FriscoCoupon.com. We’re pretty excited to see this Frisco-based business up and running, because I know we are big coupon users, more than ever now. It’s fantastic what they’re doing to help stimulate the economy. Big “Lafata Luv” to them for their great business idea! Our Newsletter Spotlight is on Jim Roman of Roman Financial Services. I’ve known Jim for quite a while, but I didn’t know that he is the only financial advisor in the Metroplex with a PhD, MBA and currently teaching financial management on a college level. That puts him among the most qualified financial advisors in North Texas and in the top 1% of all financial advisors nationally. He also has a special offer for newsletter readers that you don’t want to miss! Also, check out something cool and very “Frisco”. The current Leadership Frisco team is selling “iamfrisco.org” merchandise to benefit Frisco Family Services. We got our shirts (I am proud to be a LF alumni!) and encourage you to show your Frisco spirit for a good cause and order yours. More in the newsletter below. As I have mentioned in the past, a number of items in the newsletter are repeated as we add a number of new subscribers every week. As a result, we have decided to add the word “NEW” in front of every item that is appearing for the first time and “UPDATED” for those items that have been in before but had some kind of change. If there is something going on in and around Frisco, you will find it here! This is a community newsletter, YOUR community newsletter, and as such, we want to encourage you to send us community events as well as write-ups about people or groups who should be recognized and/or commended for what they do or have done. This is a newsletter about Frisco for all of us to play a part in. It is designed to bring our community closer together so please submit stuff to me at any time. It is also an economic tool for our community where businesses have the opportunity to advertise their products and services to people who want to hear about them. Newsletter Sponsor: FriscoCoupon.com If you were handed free money, would you take it? That’s the idea behind Friscocoupon.com. This new online coupon website provides consumers a way to save money on everyday purchases around Frisco. JIM: I founded Roman Financial Services (RFS) to combat the lack of personal attention many financial advisors give their clients. I originally worked with a larger brokerage firm and became upset with the lack of customer service, high fees and higher account balances required by such firms. It is my goal to ensure my clients receive the personal touch their finances deserve! MATT: You have an impressive academic background. JIM: Thank you, Matt. Most financial advisors might only have a Bachelor Degree or a weekend certification to add to their qualifications. I have devoted my life to learning and teaching others about the values and benefits of financial independence. In order to do this, I have obtained my doctorate, MBA, Masters, BS & BA in Finance. As an Adjunct College Professor for that past 12-years, I am excellent at transferring my knowledge to clients and helping them work towards their financial goals. MATT: What makes Roman Financial Services unique? JIM: In today's economy, individuals and business owners want to do business with someone they can trust. I have been honored with receiving an award for honesty, trust and leadership from the United States Air Force and have received numerous national awards for my hard work and dedication to my clients. I am the ONLY financial advisor in the Metroplex with a PhD, MBA and currently teaching financial management on a college level. This puts me among the most qualified financial advisors in North Texas and in the top 1% of all financial advisors nationally. MATT: I hear you offer your clients much more than most financial advisors. What products and services do you offer your clients? JIM: Most financial advisors don't really advise their clients. Most of the time, they just recommend the mutual funds their brokerage company told them to put all of their clients in. Roman Financial Services prides itself in offering our clients as many options as their investment goals require. To us, it’s more important that someone is our client for the next 20 or 30 years than anything else. So, we believe in doing what's right for our clients. In order to do the most for our clients, we offer services in Retirement Planning, Wealth Building, Estate Planning, College Savings, Stocks & Bonds, and more. Everyone’s needs are different and we have a plethora of resources for every situation and financial goal. MATT: Do you have a special offer for our newsletter readers? JIM: Most importantly, right now, people want to know how to stop losing money TODAY and where they should be moving their investments. In order to help people with their immediate needs, I am offering a free review of your investments. Additionally, Roman Financial Services is offering additional discounted services that will help you stop losing money TODAY. Here you will find more offers JUST for your newsletter readers! MATT: How can our newsletter readers find you? JIM: If you would like to get to know me better, you can go to the Roman Financial Services website, call my office, 469-252-0449, or send me an e-mail. For this week, I wanted to touch up on soil preparation since we are entering into our planting season and first week of spring in 3 weeks. Try and keep in mind the better the soil the better the plant. Soil qualities affect how fast plants grow, how big they get, how good they will look and how long they live and in a healthy way. Established trees need tender nursing, why you may ask because like humans they are trying to stay healthy. If the soil around an older tree has too much acid in the ground it could begin to die from the inside out without the person even knowing it. Sadly that tree is a living time bomb depending on where it is located. In this situation that very tree is in jeopardy of falling and if large and close to the home the damage to a home could be extensive or total. Soil is the most important issue when it comes to gardening in Texas. Our soil is so full of clay it makes the ground rock hard. If it is hard enough any rainfall would just wash over the soil not seep into it.
The following steps are necessary if planting a new garden: 1.) Use a spade, digging fork or tiller to dig at least 8in deep and break the soil into rough clods. Discard rocks, roots, and debris. Ensure you check with any utility company before starting any job in your yard. 2.) Spread a 2-3in layer of organic matter on top of the soil. 3.) Sprinkle measured amounts of fertilizer and mineral amendments evenly across the entire area. I use large amounts of perlite and spagnam peat moss. Mix all of those ingredients thoroughly into the soil and you have a healthy beginning to any garden.
Let me explain "Organic Matter". This matter improves the soil's texture and helps it retain water and nutrients. Testing a sample of soil is best. You can take samples in a baggy to garden centers. Already know Calloway's will test it for you for free on sight a five minute test. I also believe Shades of Green on Coit Road will probably do it for free if asked as well. Most chains like Home Depot or Lowe's do not have the capability of testing soils so best to use a nursery for this.
I am getting calls about our freezing temps, will they hurt my annuals or freshly planted perennials. I do not believe they will be effected however if freezing temps below 30 last for more than 6 hours it could wilt the flower like pansies but do not give up they will come back. We just do not get enough cold weather for long enough this time of year to be concerned about anything. What should be of more concern is lack of rainfall.
Pests? Watch for slugs that crawl on the ground level, do not let them on any branches if you can control that. Fire any mounds are beginning to be an issue, our warm winter overall will ensure we have a terrible season with these nasty pests and believe me I know, I have welts on my hands from not using my gloves. Using gloves in any garden is advised!! Aphids will begin to appear also, they will attack new growth. Canker worms can be found on trees, you will see a pouch on the tree, knock it down if you can reach them. Immediately put them in the trash bins. As for slugs you can sprinkle a compound called "Sluggo" around any plant you think will be affected. Aphids can be controlled with a strong blast of water from a hose, it is that easy. For fire ants you can use almost everything that is on the shelf. One item is sprinkled with pellets that attracts the ant to bring it back to the nest killing the queen.
I have prepared my weekly Tree/Shrub & Flower of the week for you. Each of my picks are Drought/Heat friendly.
Tree of the Week: Austrian Pine Tree - This is a nice evergreen pine that would need room to grow, Location: Sun - Hgt: 30ft Spread: 30ft - Good for privacy.
Shrub of the Week: Pomegranate - Deciduous Shrub - Location Sun/Part Shade - Hgt: 10-15ft Spread: 8-10ft. - Showy red-orange flowers in summer, yellow fall color. Has upright growth, great for an empty corner in your yard. Love the constant color on this pick.
Flower of the Week: Russian Sage - A shrubby perennial - Stiff stems laced with bluish purple spikes flowers. - Final Hgt: 3ft Spread 2ft. Handles dry and heat well. With its silver-gray powdered stems it makes this pick a must for any garden.
As always if you have questions or need some advice please contact me at my email address: glenn.kopanski@sbcglobal.net. I will be back in a week to introduce us into spring with some good ideas and advise so you can have a garden to enjoy for year's to come. I also want to stress our need for rainfall and suggest we all keep in mind "Water Conservation". February went down as the driest February in Dallas history. If this is a hint of things to come then we need to act on a conservation level of restrictions. Try to remember a good piece of advice (Less is best). A lawn or Garden can become dependent on water at whatever level that is being introduced. Keeping Frisco free of litter too is a good thing for us all. Cigarette butts should also be put out before throwing it out the window while driving, it would take nothing to start a major grass fire. I wish all my best and will be back next week for more tips.
